World Autism “Awareness” Day 2012 and We Are Not Buying It Any More

Did you hear the crashing thud last week when the CDC announced that 1 out of every 88 children has Autism? That was the sound of the medical establishment losing its moral authority in the Autism conversation. Despite Tom Insel, head of the IACC, spinning the message again as “better diagnosing”, the sharp reality of the rise of the Autism numbers cut through his assurances.

We are at a watershed moment much like a point in the television news coverage of the Vietnam War immediately following the Tet Offensive in January 1968. The horrific images caught on camera and the number of reported casualties was so grim they didn’t match the cheery sound bites fed to the media from the American military leadership.

In the Autism Crisis, you could see the beginning of a palpable shift last week. In the news coverage you glimpsed a bit of skepticism in the eyes of the reporters being fed the same lines, by the parade of frequent denialists, that were the mainstay of the conversation several years ago when the new number was 1 out of 150 children. Perhaps this is because Autistic children aren’t just statistics anymore; they belong to every one of us. There isn’t anyone left who doesn’t have a connection to an Autistic child. The party line “better diagnostics” doesn’t fit with what every single one of us, including the camera man and reporter, is experiencing on the ground. We see Autistic children everywhere. And the second equally clear reality; we didn’t grow up with Autistic children.

People then say, “Well they were sent away.” Away where? De-institutionalization began in 1963 so conservatively from 1970 forward 1 out of every 88 children would have been Autistic and living right in our communities. But they weren’t because they didn’t exist. I am a clinical social worker and in the 1990’s I worked for a large public community mental health agency. My patients were primarily chronically mentally ill adults, many of which lived in group homes we supervised. There were no Autistic adults. I saw Schizophrenia and trauma and clients dually diagnosed with psychiatric and substance abuse issues. Frankly I saw it all and it was pretty rough, but I never saw Autism.

Doctors aren’t, as a stereotype, known for their small egos, yet last week they allowed themselves to be blamed for misdiagnosing Autism since the 1940’s. With a small exception of subtle cases, Autism is not hard to diagnose. Granted as an Autism mom I’ve become more familiar than the average civilian, yet with no medical training, I can spot a kid on the Spectrum from three aisles away in Target on a busy Saturday morning. It’s mind boggling that as an entire profession doctors are letting themselves take the fall for missing thousands and thousands of children who would have been flapping, stimming, possibly nonverbal, in diapers at 10 years old, and in some occasions violent. Yet, we didn’t hear doctors utter a peep in defense of their profession last week. Are we really to believe they would take this level of criticism without firing back? If we are willing to accept that our physicians are that poorly trained and that incompetent aren’t we terrified as a nation about our medical care? For any other profession accused of this level of incompetence there would be Congressional Hearings! They didn’t misdiagnose these children because they didn’t exist. “Better diagnosing” is bullshit.

Parents no longer believe what they are told about Autism or vaccine safety in the news because it is incongruous with what they are experiencing in their lives; we see more Autistic children every year and we hear vaccine injury stories far too frequently. The word ‘mystery’ doesn’t fit for Autism any more either and neither does saying “we have no idea”. Parents aren’t buying it. We have seen too many linear experiences of regression into Autism following vaccine injury. Doctors cannot point to actual safety studies for the current vaccine schedule because they haven’t been done. Because the medical establishment has refused to study vaccine safety with any credibility, parents are left with only one reasonable option given these soaring Autism numbers – to opt out of vaccination.

The toothpaste is out of the tube. Like Westmoreland during Vietnam, Insel can continue to spew platitudes, but public support is no longer with the ‘war on disease’ as it is being fought with the unwinnable strategy of the most aggressive vaccine schedule of any country on earth. Parents are asking whose war is this anyway? Why is the government more preoccupied with my child’s vaccination status than I am as the parent? Like the moms of Vietnam soldiers, we Autism moms have come to understand that our children were considered necessary and acceptable collateral damage in the war on disease. I have never met a parent willing to sacrifice their child for the greater good of the herd.

Under the current administration we have seen a huge increase in Autism and no leadership to speak of. The people in charge don’t know what they’re doing and have proven they can’t be trusted. In a domineering relationship there comes a moment, as quick as the green flash as the sun sets at the horizons edge, where the submissive partner takes their power back for good. Parents are taking back control of their children’s health. This is the dawn of a new era in Autism leadership.

I’m reading the book Age of Autism now, a stunning tour de force on the ravages mercury exposure has had on the world. It explains in well-documented detail how the chemical ingredients of vaccines (or drugs like antibiotics) can interact with natural diseases to cause horrifying new diseases, especially how mercury in medicines, antiseptics, and teething powders caused dementia, paralysis, and death in thousands of those who took them for syphilis and other conditions. I reacted to a DPT as an infant with encephalitis and have Asperger’s now. Both my arms were paralyzed for two days by a tetanus booster when I was nineteen, brachioplexal neuropathy. I later contracted oral herpes from a boyfriend, and had a high fever and cold sores on my mouth. Two months later I developed horrible, permanent, total insomnia. I had to heavily sedate myself to sleep. Then I developed multiple scherosis, numbness and tingling in extremities, loss of balance, dizziness, nausea, extreme fatigue, and in one attack, my left arm and leg were completely paralyzed for over a month. From reading this book I’ve learned that these are all symptoms of mercury poisoning from vaccines, and I think they must have been triggered by the interaction of the varicella virus with the mercury still in my body from a total of ten DTPs. It may be, Tracy, that your son experienced something similar with the varicella virus interacting with the antibiotic ingredients still in his system, causing his autism.

here’s an alarming story. My son, has never had a vaccination. I did not have any vaccinations months before pregnancy and while nursing. But he did have a UTI at 5 weeks of age, was pumped full of antibiotics which have aluminum as a preservative into that tiny 5 week old body. At 14 months of age he became ill with a horrid internal and external case of chicken pox, yes a severe live case of a nasty viral. He started fading away after the chicken pox.
But I will also say and believe whole heartedly that heavy metals, toxins, serious virals can cause serious damage to the body which can impact a developing neurological pathways. Before I heard Dr. Kendal Stewart speak about the connection of inflammation and autism, I would still wonder. Because up until that point my son was the non vaccinated, breastfed, organic baby food eating baby and he still got autism.

    http://www.maedica.org/articles/2012/1/2012_Vol7%2810%29_No1_pg38-48.pdf

The objective of this study was to assess the levels of ten toxic
metals and essential elements in hair samples of children with
autism, and to correlate the level of these elements with the
    severity of autism.
Method: The participants were 44 children, age 3 to 9 years, with
Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) according to Diagnostic and
Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders 4th Edition, (DSM-IV). The
severity of autistic symptomatology was measured by the Childhood
Autism Rating Scale (CARS). Hair analysis was performed to evaluate
the long term metal exposure and mineral level.
Results: By comparing hair concentration of autistic vs nonautistic
children, elevated hair concentrations were noted for aluminum,
arsenic, cadmium, mercury, antimony, nickel, lead, and vanadium. Hair
levels of calcium, iron, iodine, magnesium, manganese, molybdenum,
zinc, and selenium were considered deficient. There was a significant
positive correlation between lead & verbal communication (p = 0.020)
and general impression (p = 0.008). In addition, there was a
significant negative correlation between zinc & fear and nervousness
    (p = 0.022).
Conclusion: Our data supports the historic evidence that heavy metals
play a role in the development of ASD. In combination with an
inadequate nutritional status the toxic effect of metals increase
along with the severity of symptoms.

Thank you so much for this. Here’s a question: if my girls don’t get any further vaccines, am I going to be able to send them to school? What do I say to the schools or put on the forms if I stop any further vaccinations?

Thanks Mama Mac and all of the Warrior Moms for sharing your stories and knowledge. My first read was “While Rome Burns”, introduced by my sister, Lisa. You had me in tears. My niece is vaccine injured. 3 1/2 years old now and my sister is working diligently on her recovery. I am a first time Mom (11 weeks today!) and I have yet to give her one vaccination. I’m scared to death. Anyway, keep up the good work and thank you!!

This was the most succinct and touching thing I read all day.
As for Genevieve- kudos for even considering taking a stand! I too followed mainstream medicine and family tradition until my son received 12 shots at 12 months… he went from typically developing (with GI issues) to full blown autism within a month.
We’re still fighting to recover his overall health, but I can attest that it’s only gotten better since we halted vaccinations (flu included/especially!). I want to believe we can get out from under this beast called autism, but it’s not likely.
Thanks again for this article, supermama Mac!

They’ve known about the link between vaccines and autism for years.
Senator Robert F. Kennedy, JR. wrote a fascinating exposé of a government cover-up of a study that was announced at a CDC convened meeting in June 2000. The study showed a definite link between thimerosal and autism. According to CDC epidemiologist, Tom Verstraeten, who had analysed the agency’s database of 100,000 children, thimerosal appeared to be responsible for a dramatic increase in autism and other neurological disorders such as speech delays, hyperactivity and attention-deficit disorder. See Deadly Immunity in Rolling Stone, June 20, 2005
Instead of alerting the public or ensuring withdrawal of the vaccines, officials and executives at the meeting spent two days discussing how to cover up the damaging data. The CDC paid the Institute of Medicine to conduct a new study to rule out the metal’s link to autism. And in order to thwart the Freedom of Information Act, it gave its database to a private company so that it was unavailable to independent researchers.
Dr. Russell Blaylock managed to pry loose the report of the “Scientific Review of Vaccine Safety Datalink Information” as the 2000 conference was called, by invoking the Freedom of Information Act. You can read his report, The Truth Behind the Vaccine Coverup on http://articles.mercola.com

How many deaths will it take till he knows, that too many people have died? The answer my friend, is blowin in the wind, the answer is blowin in the wind.” Yes, ;the turning of the Vietnam tide is an apt parable, alright!

  14. Noel says:

Good write up. Have you looked into new suggestions for DSM-V. You will go mad. If I removed correctly, diagnosis of autism is removed from DSM-V. I have no clue what will replace that. I strongly suspect, its just an effort by CDC to bury the statistics and overall epidemic of autism.

  15. Kate Tietje says:

Only you can decide — NOT the doctors or gov’t. And I would suggest to your husband that you will not agree to go ahead until you are both on the same page. I am doing a series on my blog now, http://www.modernalternativemama.com about vaccines. I’m in the middle of the risk-benefit analysis (looking at VAERS vs. CDC and WHO and things like this, to determine actual risk of each disease plus risk of vaccine). Perhaps this would help you and your husband to make a decision you are both comfortable with.

  16. Jenn Kaplan says:

    Fantastic!

  17. Xaka says:

While I love this blog post, it’s disingenuous to imply that most autism is vaccine-related. We must also look at what we are feeding children and ourselves while we are pregnant, before we are pregnant, etc. Food is a major healer…and it is a major toxin. Enough studies have been done that we know the digestive system of autistic kids tends to be out of wack. That is a curable thing, if we are willing to do more than just point the finger at doctors and vaccines.

    • Jennifer Craig says:

While a nourishing diet is, indeed, important, that will not counteract the injection of mercury and aluminum straight into the blood stream.

I really struggle with whether to give my daughter her 12 month vaccines. My husband and her doctor pushed me to get them at 6 months when I was was hesitant after reading about them. Now the more I read, the more I think oh my goodness, why am I taking risks with my daughter’s health? The question I have is, what do I do if I DO NOT give her the vaccines? How do I protect her? I agree with many — vaccines are not the only reason, yet we see increases of not only autism but childhood cancer, disorders like diabetes and arthritis, asthma, eczema, and more. The sad part is, my daughter’s doctor doesn’t know anything but what Pharma is telling her :/

    • Hi Genevieve, Thinking Mom, Mentos here. And I must say, your question gave me renewed hope on this “World Autism Awareness Day.” Just as I was starting to feel as if no one was listening, there you were… listening, asking and most of all, THINKING!
So, you’ve researched vaccines. You know they can cause harm. The next step is to research the immune system. Learn about how it works and what vaccines can and can’t do. How they work. In learning this, you’ll discover more about how they can trigger autoimmunity. You’ll feel more confident in your decision.
There are also homeopathic alternatives to vaccines you can look into. And keep in mind, anecdotally, almost all parents of unvaccinated children tend to report their kids are much healthier than their vaccinated counterparts. A healthy immune system is key. Research how to keep your daughter’s immune system functioning optimally… and you will find your answer.
By the way. I was you in 2007. But I didn’t have the Thinking Moms, or anyone, to ask. My daughter lost her language after her 12 month vaccines. You being here has touched my heart and given me motivation to continue, even on the days it seems like no one is listening! You can start your research at my website http://www.regardingcaroline.com/Immune_System

      • Genevieve says:

Thank you so much Rebecca! My family and friends think I am nuts to question immunizations, with calls/emails/fb posts telling me I am risking my daughter to not give her vaccines. I really wish I had stuck to my guns at 6 months, but here we are! Can’t go backwards but I want to learn everything I can so that when we get to 12 months (we’re at 10.5) I can speak with confidence and not make the same mistake I did giving in at 6 months. :/ Thank you so much for the information, I can’t tell you how much I appreciate your link and response!

      • Jennifer Craig says:

Genevieve, take heart. You child was born with a protective system. This does not mean she won’t get sick of course but my generation expected our kids to get measles, mumps, chicken pox. They are NOT deadly diseases. What has happened is that people have forgotten how to nurse them.
In olden days I was a nurse and of course, believed vaccinations were effective. Then I saw a vaccine damaged child, ruined for life by DPT. I spent several years researching the topic and eventually wrote a book, Jabs, Jenner and Juggernauts that I hope is understandable by the ordinary Mom.
You need to know that the death rate for all the infectious diseases had reached, zero in the case of measles and miniscule for others BEFORE vax was introduced.
Whale/to is an excellent resources, as is the International Medical Council for Vaccination.

How can Doctors answer back as is suggested they might in this article? They know in their hearts that no vaccine protects, and they must have read the statistics plastered all over the internet, otherwise they are not doing their job properly. Perhaps they dare not venture on to this website, or Child Health Safety, or Whale.to or VacTruth, for fear of having to acknowlwedge this truth.
They are a Party to this crime, for never revealing to Parents the dangers involved, the total lack of any disease prevention offered by vaccines, and by offering the bland and wicked line that
“I can assure you that all vaccines are safe and effective,” That statement alone should merit a custodial sentence, because it is uttered to enhance their earnings, not to protect any child.

  32. Pingback: AnneDachel.com » Blog Archive » The Thinking Moms’ Revolution: “World Autism “Awareness” Day 2012 and We Are Not Buying It Any More”

  33. Anne Dachel says:

They tried ignoring it, trivializing it, and celebrating it, but the reality of a generation of disabled children is a growing cancer that threatens us all. On Thurs, March 29, CDC director Dr. Thomas Frieden announced the stunning new numbers, not at a well-publicized press conference, but during a hastily announced conference call. Rather than face the cameras and advise the nation that we’re in the grip of yet another dramatic increase in autism, he chose this low-key way to give us the news and speculated that it was all due to better diagnosing.
In 2004, the autism rate reached one in 166 children after years of steadily worsening numbers.

In 2007, the rate became one in 150 children.

In 2009, it reached one in 110.

    Now in 2012, it’s one in 88.

(Keep in mind that for each of these statistics, the rate for boys alone is four times as bad.)

Each and every time officials have attributed the numbers to better diagnosing. They use top experts and the media in their effects to make this disaster go away. The alternative is the unthinkable.

What if our government and mainstream medicine has been lying to us for years?

What if a manmade epidemic is crippling our children and threatening our future?

What if the people we trust the most can’t be trusted? What if…?

This is what terrorizes so many. The health and welfare of our children has become secondary. Every effort is being made in denying everything and doing nothing. The alternative just can’t be true. This can’t have happened. Doctors and health officials can’t be responsible for the autism nightmare.

    And that’s where we’re at.

This is what we really need to be aware of on World Autism Awareness Day. We’re a nation paralyzed by autism.

Anne Dachel, Media editor: Age of Autism

    • Bravo, Anne. Well said.

    • Santoshi says:

Is the statistic 1 in 88 worldwide or nationwide? Children defined as people under 18, correct? Has anyone designed a map of sorts, to show areas (in the country or world) where autism is more concentrated? It appears to be more so in SF Bay Area, but perhaps that is because I live here.

Yes, perfectly stated Alison. The single difference is of course that this is still not at the centre of public attention due to media manipulation. But you are right, I believe, that there is an irreversible slippage of credibility.
